I love that creativity and expression of art come in so many forms. Karen from The KU Cakery is a true artist, conjuring up beautiful creations in her kitchen. Her cakes and sugar work are intricate and skillful.
That is why I was so excited to sit down with her and interview her on the journey she has taken, what inspires her and how the cake industry relates to design.

Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Karen, and I am the founder of The KU Cakery. I was born in Hong Kong and move to New Zealand at young age. After graduation, I entered the finance field and worked at various international companies as a Financial Analyst.
One day I was looking at my friend’s social media and discovered a passion for sugarcraft and cake decoration. I started cake making as hobby for friends and family. In 2014 I entered the Festival cake competition at the Hong Kong Bakery Expo and won a Silver award.
Ever since then I have been pushing the boundaries of my cake style and skills to create the next wow factor.
